Vise, the technology platform that delivers personalized portfolios at scale, today announced the launch of Asset Location, which places each holding across a client’s taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-exempt accounts in the account where it is taxed least. Asset Location runs inside the same engine that already manages tax-loss harvesting, capital gains budgets, and transitions on Vise, so advisors no longer have to choose between locating assets well and managing taxes well.

Asset location is one of the most widely supported ideas in financial advice. Vanguard estimates it can add up to 60 basis points of value a year, on average, without changing a portfolio’s overall allocation or risk.1 Yet in a recent survey, only 54% of advisors said they use asset location to improve after-tax outcomes for their high-net-worth clients, compared with 81% who use tax-loss harvesting.2

The obstacle is technology. Most advisors run a client’s portfolio across separate systems for trading, tax management, and reporting that were each built to do one job and were never built to agree with each other. A trading system’s location rules may call for moving a stock into the Roth while the tax management engine flags the gain that sale would realize, and the reporting system has no record that location happened at all. Faced with conflicting instructions, most advisors keep tax management and leave asset location off, or run it by hand for only their largest clients.

On Vise, the location decision and the tax decision are made together. The engine weighs where each holding belongs against what it would cost in taxes to move it this year, taking into account capital gains budgets, locked positions, restrictions, and strategies such as direct indexing and Long Short, and then proposes trades for each account. Sometimes that means moving a holding now, and sometimes it means waiting or making a smaller Location Swap that captures most of the benefit for less tax.

Because firms do not agree on a single formula for asset location, Vise enables each firm to set its own location rules the same way it configures an investment strategy. Asset Location can be turned on for one group of accounts and left off for another in the same household.

“Managing a client’s entire household to one allocation, with asset location and tax management solved together, has been the holy grail for a long time,” said Runik Mehrotra, Co-Founder and Co-Head of Vise. “Rule-based location and tax management fought each other, so most firms never turned location on. On Vise, the location decision and the tax decision get made together, for every household.”

Asset Location is part of Vise’s broader approach of managing a client’s whole portfolio in one place, with every asset class and strategy in one account and reporting, rebalancing, tax management, and trading running on one platform.

As of October 2026, the Vise platform supports more than $152 billion in platform assets and 245K+ accounts.
